Care Workers Start Blogging

Bettercaring, a care home search engine, has launched its own blog to discuss the key issues around the elderly and the social care industry. Haven’t they got better things to do, like help old ladies cross the road? Outspoken, controversial and to the point (give it time I’m promised), the Bettercaring blog aims to raise awareness of key issues and tackle some of the pricklier topics in its own style.

Written by Bettercaring’s in-house team of journalists it aims to provide up-to-date discussion on anything from household aids and adaptations to the latest Government legislation. It will also include first-hand accounts from journalists about the people interviewed for the stories that are featured on the site.

Bettercaring’s editor, Andrew Chilvers, said: “We all have opinions on the stories we read, or the legislation that comes out from the Government, and this blog is an effective way to encourage debate from our readership. We hear of stories on a weekly basis where the system has let people down, or when individuals in the industry have done something out-of the-ordinary. The blog gives us an opportunity to open up this discussion to a wider community, and allows our readership to share their experiences with us.

Topics already covered on the blog include the cost of care homes, neglect, over 60s playgrounds and the struggles faced by carers juggling their familial responsibility with work. It’s a right riot!

A new Web site has landed aimed at encouraging more women into employment in the science, engineering and technology (SET) sectors.

The Web site for the Bradford-based UK Resource Centre for Women in Science Engineering and Technology (UKRC) aims to bring more women into areas of the workplace that have traditionally been the preserve of men. Apparently, half a million women in the UK are qualified in either science, engineering or technology - but less than a third work in these sectors, all of which are suffering a severe skills shortage. If you’re interested, all of these women are single …

Men with clipboards say skills in the SET sector are expected to decline further over the next ten years which could seriously damage the UK’s productivity and competitiveness.

The UKRC, through its Web site, plans to single-handily tackle the low numbers of women working in science, engineering and technology by providing a central source of expertise, data and information to encourage more women to geek-up. The site also provides a mentoring service, should any of the candidates break a nail …

Social Downtime

I figured you would find this interesting. I did. Number crunchers at Pingdom have monitored the uptime (availability) of 14 of the largest social network sites in the world, including MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn, Orkut, Friendster, Windows Live Spaces, etc. This report shows how much they have been unavailable so far in 2008. Bebo comes out worst with 12 hours 28 minutes downtime from Jan 1 - Feb 25, 2008. Yahoo! 360 deserves a tap on the back for having a bathroom break of just 5 minutes. I guess there have been a few teenagers with their knickers in a twist…
